This was my first Amber Road tour and I enjoyed it immensely. I arrived in Italy three days before the tour began, and Amber Road hired a car to pick me up from the airport and drive me over an hour away to a small village called Crema, where I was staying on my own at an Airbnb. The car service also picked me up from Crema three days later to bring me to Milan. It was very nice to be able to purchase this extra service before the actual tour began, and it was seamless. As a first-timer in Italy, I was nervous. But Amber Road made me feel like they were watching out for me even before the actual tour began. Then I finally arrived in Milan for the beginning of my tour. Our tour guide, Federica, was wonderful. She was attentive to all of our needs, was always there to answer any questions we had, made it easy for us to go from one location to another, and was extremely knowledgeable on history of every site we attended. She made our tour fun, interesting, and stress-free. The coach that brought us around the villages was comfortable, clean, and punctual. I also loved the people who were on the tour. They were lots of fun and it was nice that they were all from different U.S. states and even Australia, South Africa, and Canada. The four hotels that we stayed in were beautiful and centrally located. The boat rides were amazing and the included meals were well-thought out and delicious. It was so nice that Federica and Amber Road made sure that we sampled foods and wine that were local to each of our locations. I especially loved our hotels in Lake Como and Stresa, and particularly enjoyed our visit to a violinmaker’s workshop, a fisherman’s island, the wine and food tasting at a vineyard, and the farewell dinner. I will never forget this wonderful tour and I am looking to book another Amber Road tour in the very near future.
Italian Lakes & Milan tour Comments Leave a comment
This was our third tour with Amber Roads and it was great fun. We love the small group, minimal time travelling, lots of walking, and “off the beaten path” approach taken by Amber Roads. One of the highlights was the trip to the violin maker’s workshop in Cremona…….something so different and not an experience one would have with a large tour. The concert after was wonderful. Our local guides were very informative and Rita in Bellagio had lots of interesting personal stories about the inhabitants that made the history come to life. Federica was amazing and so accommodating. John has several food sensitivities and couldn’t eat much of the local food but Federica was very helpful making sure that he was well fed. In addition, our local boat trips were well organized. Bellagio on Lake Como and Stresa on Lake Maggiore were so beautiful. I would suggest, if one is taking this trip, to read Beneath a Scarlet Sky. It is the story of Pino Lela, a spy during the war, and, again, brings the history of the area to life.
Congratulations, Amber Road Tours, for a delightfully organised Tour to this magic area of Italy, and many warm thanks to Federica. You are a gem with your caring, happy and intelligent leading.
Outstanding trip, itinerary and accommodations, along with an outstanding Tour Director and local guides. We never would have independently found the violin recital or violin maker’s workshop – those were highlights for us. Thank you again for another fun adventure!
Another great tour! This tour provided us a wealth of experiences in a part of Italy we had yet to visit. Touring the various lakes areas was beautiful. The many “on water” excursions always provided a memorable perspective of the surrounding islands and villages. And the villas we visited on our island adventures were real highlights. Beyond the traditional lake areas was our time in Mantova. What a fascinating place to visit. The Palazzo Ducale and Palazzo Te were very impressive as was our local guide. Actually, all the local guides made for a much richer experience. Federica, our tour manager, was a pleasure. She is professional, well organized and very easy to get to know. Spending time with her was always a bonus. As with our previous tours, the hotel selections were very good. The Bellagio and Stresa lake view locations were quite dramatic. The hotel staff at Hotel Milano Scala was exceptional. What would a tour be without a winery experience and ours was a very pleasant afternoon. We have always appreciated how Amber Road puts together great itineraries and handles the details . . . Milan & Lombardia was no exception. Also, thanks for arranging our pre and post tour lodging.
I enjoyed this tour very much from start to finish. Lombardia and the bits of Piedmont we traveled are beautiful. The itinerary was a great mix of scheduled touring and free time to explore on your own, or rest. Also, the mix of city crowds (and chaos) and rural peace was appreciated. The hotels on this tour were wonderful, especially those in Bellagio on Lake Como and in Stresa on Lake Maggiore. The views from the rooms of the lakes and surrounding mountains were spectacular. Our tour leader, Federica, was great. She was very helpful and obviously knows and loves Italy. This was a fairly large tour group for Amber Road Tours, 18 people (from the U.S., England, Ireland, South Africa and Australia). Great tour!
The tour was excellent. Federica was a great leader, always ready to help. Places to visit were really special and the local guides were very knowledgeable .
Wonderful Tour. My first with Amber Road and hopefully not my last. Our Tour Guide Federica was excellent, very well prepared for each city we visited, and also a fund of knowledge about Italy in general. There was enough time for relaxation and recuperation after long days on our feet.
An excellent tour. Our guide, Frederica was great. Very Well organised & very helpful. Specifically she helped suggest & book restaurants everywhere. Lake Como was the highlight with the Belvedere hotel really excellent. We found the tour well paced and showed us all the things that we should see. All in all a great tour
Our second tour with Amber Road was as interesting and stimulating as our first. Thanks especially to our Tour Director, Frederica who was very knowledgeable, efficient and very kind. She loves her job and it shows in her warmth and willingness to share stories of her experiences. We love the fact that Amber Road takes us to cities and towns we would never have seen – Cremona and the visit to a violin workshop and the Violin Museum was a highlight as was the visit to the da Vinci painting of the Last Supper. Of course, the Lakes – Como and Maggiore were beautiful and Bellagio and Stresa were perfect for walking, exploring and eating. The hotels were all first class – good locations and very comfortable rooms – great views, too, of the Lakes.
Our first Amber Road Tour to Milan and the Lake area…..we had a fabulous time and we loved our tour director Federica….her knowledge and enthusiasm for the area were contagious and she always had our back. We were lucky with great weather, wine and food. I was amazed how many little towns were toured on this trip with lots of surprises.
The Milan and Lombardia tour was a great compliment to the 4 other tours of Italy we have taken with Amber Road and we will remember this area of our favourite country for its incredibly scenic beauty. We were very impressed by all of the hotels on this tour and the experience of eating breakfast while listening to a live harp performance in Milan was over the top. Our tour manager Federica was a wonderful host: warm and attentive, funny, and generous in sharing her vast knowledge of the area.
The Milan and Lombardia Tour was excellent! The hotels and their locations met our expectations; the range and pace of activities were excellent and included meals were very good — consistent with other Amber Road Tours we have taken. Federica was an excellent trip leader-very knowledgeable, helpful, cheerful, and ‘watchful over our group’. The combination of interesting venue and excellent tour director made this tour an extremely pleasant holiday.
Another great tour with Amber Road! This was an area we’d visited before but once again they showed us new and exciting things. The big party got on very well together and some interesting conversations took place. It was good to meet some previous Amber Road friends and our tour guide Frederica was a gem. Highlights, there were many – Bellagio, a jewel on a silver lake but it’s often the unexpected that makes a trip. The start of the Mille Miglia in Brescia and a chance to get last minute tickets for an opera at La Scala, a lifetimes’ dream come true! How to top that? Well, do another Amber Road tour, use the trips as a template for your return visits to Italy.
This is the first tour for us with Amber Road. It exceeded our expectations! Almost everything was perfect – the hotels were comfortable, centrally located, and even luxurious. The tour was paced just right between sightseeing and free time to pursue our own interests or relax. In the two lake locations we had rooms with balconies where we could sit and take in the beautiful lake scenery. Our tour director, Federica, was excellent. She was both relaxed and vigilant, making sure that we all were taken care of in whatever we needed. Mostly, the included meals were very enjoyable. Only two dinners had an entre not universally appealing and Jonathan is not letting that happen again. Even though we have traveled to almost every region that Amber Road Tours provides tours, we have not seen any of these regions in depth. One of the best strengths of the tours is that they do cover places and sights not available on many other tours. In fact, that is the main reason, we decided to try Amber Roads. We were not disappointed. We will travel again with Amber Road.
WOW! Our first tour with Amber Road delivered way more than expected, and we expected much. We were 19 including two Australians and two Brits. All our dealings with Amber Road were extremely professional and promptly responsive. The hotels were comfortable to sumptuous. The lakes hotels all afforded lakeside views with balconies. On the last hotel on Lake Maggiore we had a corner room looking to the lake, with marble and wood and two bathrooms, his and hers. The meals were at top restaurants with gourmet level food. In Mantua we ate at the best restaurant in the city and in Stresa our farewell dinner was at a Michelin guide restaurant. The itinerary was intelligently designed and beautifully routed that it flowed with ease, so important. Our guide, Federica Wagner, was a jewel. She was informative, available for all our needs, particularly to several on our tour who turned out to have special needs that could have impinged on the rest of us. But she handled even this with aplomb and efficient care. Most of our fellow travelers were just lovely. All in all, this is now one of the best tours we have ever had. We are now in the process of selecting our next Amber Road adventure.
Another great May in Italy with Amber! What did I like best? The violin maker was unique, the amazing museums of Milan and seeing La Scala. Actually the best part could be the beauty of Lake Como and my fabulous room with a view of the mountain range. I loved Freddie’s [tour manager Federica] sense of humor, the fabulous food and the surprise of finding antique race cars in Brescia. Best is hard to define with a great group of people, a new region to explore and having history come alive.
Thanks Amber Road (Jonathan, Sonya, Lisa) and our wonderful Tour Leader, Federica Wagner, for a terrific fifth tour. Federica was a joy to travel with; our hotels – especially those overlooking Lakes Como and Maggiore – were lovely; the restaurants for group meals and the activities were well chosen as usual and our travelling companions were most congenial. We can’t wait to do another trip with you!
Another fabulous Amber Road tour. We hadn’t visited this region since 1980 so it was wonderful to see the new Milan. The many lakes we visited, the breathtaking accommodations, always delicious food, fun fellow travelers including Aussies and Brits have us trying to decide where we will travel next with Amber Road.
Whether returning to familiar favorites or exploring new towns and attractions, the Amber Road tour of Milan and Lombardy provided a wonderful sojourn that leaves us eager to select another region of Italy to visit. The group of 17 was congenial, and Tour manager Frederica Wagner gave us excellent leadership tempered with insight for the group members’ needs and preferences. Her knowledge of history, geography, and culture was apparent in her informal narratives and anecdotes, as well as suggestions for “own time” eating and pursuits. Local guides for specific towns and attractions were excellent as well, especially Valentina and Deborah in Milan and Rita in Bellagio. The balance of structured tour time and time on our own seemed about right. The time simply to enjoy the locale is important amid a busy schedule of planned visits/events.
The accommodations were all very comfortable and well located. The group meals provided enjoyable opportunities to sample local cuisine, and the size of the group ensured chances to mix and share with fellow travelers. Spending three nights in each place fomented a familiarity not enjoyed on stops of shorter duration. The variety of experiences made the days fly by. Walking distances and transport transfers were comfortable, and Federica provided alternatives seamlessly when needed. The tour more than met our expectations, and we will look forward to further travels with Amber Road Tours.
This was my first trip with Amber Road Tours and it was spectacular! We were a group of 17 that got along very well. Our fabulous Tour Manager Federica, was well organized, knowledgeable, helpful and a lot of fun. Our tour guides at each site were wonderful with a wealth of information and our coach driver Giovanni was great. The hotels were lovely and within walking distance to the historic centres, villages, shopping and restaurants. The food was delicious and the local wines outstanding. This was a beautiful trip and I’m looking forward to my next adventure with Amber Road Tours.
Our third time with Amber Road Tours was our favorite! The congenial group, all but one had traveled with ART, had a lively time and many shared memories of past tours and common interests that gave the vacation an added dimension. Federica, our leader, was knowledgeable, witty, and flexible when circumstances warranted and always made sure that we were able to make the most of this fascinating part of Italy. Our communal dinners were delightful and the hotels were outstanding. By staying in each location three nights, an added bonus, we really learned to navigate each selected city and it gave us time to settle in a bit. Most of all, the places we visited and the special touches – such as going to a violin maker’s workshop and a private recital in the Baptistry at Cremona – were enjoyed and appreciated by all. We had ample time on our own and we, and a few others, took the opportunity to go to Como one afternoon and on another occasion, we visited the Santa Guilia Museo Della Citta in Brescia – a must for anyone interested in well-preserved Roman mosaics and wall paintings.
